Commoning and the possibilities of rural futures
A podcast episode and new article ask how rural futures are being opened up in Spain, England, South Africa and beyond.
Shepherding schools and reviving rural futures
Our latest podcast episode asks how livestock shepherding relates to commoning and enclosures in an ongoing project, Inland: Campo Adentro. Inland is a shepherd school, or ‘agroecological lighthouse’, with a three-word manifesto: art, agriculture and territory.
In this episode, Anoushka Zoob Carter talks to Fernando Garcia Dory about how a space has been created to reclaim ecological relationships, whilst also challenging regressive politics and opening up new possibilities.

Food systems are broken. Could treating land as commons help?
From India to Wales, Kenya to Mexico, farmers have been fiercely protesting challenges to their livelihoods in recent years. At the same time, an increasing number of social movements have been focusing on the problem of land as private property. Individualised access to land is not enough.
Elise Wach compares how ideas around commoning are discussed in social movements around land and food in England and South Africa. Could movements for land commoning help to create food systems that are more ecologically sound and socially equitable?
Book: Navigating Uncertainty
For many contemporary challenges, navigating uncertainty – where we cannot predict what may happen – is essential.
Ian Scoones’ new book, Navigating Uncertainty, challenges dominant approaches based on risk and control, highlighting alternatives that are more flexible. These include approaches that are communal, mutual, based on values, and responsive to variable ecologies and conditions.
The book is out now from Polity and is available in print and digital versions, including an Open Access version. To mark its publication, the author will be speaking at a series of events in October.
